Renter Relocation Checklist
Renters need to watch deposits, lease overlap, screening requirements, and neighborhood tradeoffs.
Renters often move faster than homeowners, but the cash stack can still be heavy. Application fees, security deposits, first month, last month, pet deposits, parking, utility setup, and lease overlap can arrive before the new paycheck does.
Before applying
- Confirm income requirements and whether offer letters count.
- Ask about all recurring fees, not just base rent.
- Check parking, storage, trash, pest, pet, amenity, and package fees.
- Calculate the cost of breaking or overlapping the current lease.
- Keep screenshots and written quotes for every fee.
If the move only works with a best-case apartment listing, keep researching.
