Moving Costs That Surprise People

The move itself often costs more than the calculator category suggests.

Many households budget for movers or a truck and forget the surrounding costs. The actual transition can include application fees, deposits, utility setup, cleaning, repairs, storage, insurance changes, pet fees, new furniture, temporary lodging, takeout, time off work, and duplicate rent.

Use a transition buffer

After listing known costs, add a 10–20% buffer for the costs you have not discovered yet. The buffer is not pessimism; it is recognition that relocation is a project with friction.

Enter one-time moving costs in the workbook before deciding whether the target city is cheaper.
