How Much Cash Should You Have Before Moving?
A move can be affordable monthly and still dangerous if it drains the entire cash cushion.
There is no universal cash number because households vary, but a safer move usually covers the transition plus an emergency buffer after deposits are paid.
Build the cash target in layers
- Known move costs: movers, truck, fuel, flights, boxes, cleaning, deposits, utility setup, pet fees.
- Overlap costs: old rent, new rent, temporary lodging, storage, meals during travel.
- Income timing: first paycheck delay, reimbursement lag, unpaid time off, or spouse job search.
- Post-move reserve: at least enough to handle one ugly surprise without using high-interest debt.
If the move requires spending the emergency fund to zero, the monthly math needs to be unusually strong before the decision is defensible.
