Editorial Policy

How we write, review, update, and correct content at BestCostOfLiving.com.

Last updated: May 2026.

Our Editorial Mission

BestCostOfLiving.com exists to help people make more informed decisions about where to live by providing honest, well-researched information about cost-of-living differences across U.S. cities. Our editorial mission is to be genuinely useful — not to generate traffic for its own sake, and not to tell people what they want to hear.

Writing Process

Each guide on this site is written by a researcher with a background in household finance, housing economics, regional economic analysis, or a related field. We do not publish content that:

  • Is generated primarily for search engine visibility rather than genuine reader value
  • Makes unsupported claims about future costs or market conditions
  • Presents approximations as precise facts
  • Is designed to support advertising revenue at the expense of accuracy

Every guide is written to answer a specific, practical question that someone planning a move would actually ask. We aim for guides that someone could act on — not vague overviews that end without helping the reader.

Data Sources and Methodology

Cost-of-living data on this site is derived from:

  • Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) — Consumer Expenditure Survey, regional CPI data, and American Time Use Survey
  • U.S. Census Bureau — American Community Survey (ACS) housing, income, and commuting data
  • Published regional cost-of-living indices — including research from academic institutions and nonpartisan policy organizations
  • State revenue department resources — for income, property, and sales tax information

We do not fabricate data. Where data is an estimate or approximation, we say so explicitly. Where data has meaningful uncertainty or variability, we explain that context rather than presenting a single number as definitive.

Data Limitations We Always Disclose

  • All cost figures are metro-area averages. Within-city variation can be substantial.
  • Cost-of-living conditions change continuously. Figures may not reflect the most recent market conditions.
  • Our comparison tool does not account for personal income tax rates, property tax rates, childcare costs, or career earnings potential in the destination market.
  • Estimates are based on average household spending patterns. Individual results will vary based on household size, lifestyle, and spending habits.

Review Process

Before publication, each piece of content is reviewed for:

  • Factual accuracy against cited sources
  • Clarity and readability for a general audience
  • Appropriate qualification of estimates and approximations
  • Absence of misleading claims or unsupported conclusions
  • Internal consistency with other content on the site

Update Process

We review evergreen guides at least annually and update them when:

  • Underlying data sources have been substantially revised
  • Market conditions have shifted significantly (e.g., major housing market changes)
  • Tax laws or policies have changed in ways that affect the content
  • Reader feedback identifies outdated or incorrect information

When a guide is updated, we note the update date prominently on the page. We preserve the original publication date when available to provide publication context.

Correction Process

We take corrections seriously. If a reader identifies an error, we:

  1. Acknowledge the correction request within 5 business days
  2. Investigate the claim against primary sources
  3. If the error is confirmed, update the content promptly (within 2 weeks in most cases)
  4. Note the correction on the relevant page if the error was substantive

To submit a correction, email [email protected] with the specific page URL, the specific claim you believe is incorrect, and a source or explanation for the correct information.

Advertising and Editorial Independence

This site may display advertising through Google AdSense. Our editorial content is written and reviewed independently of any advertising relationships. Advertisers do not influence which cities, states, or topics we cover, how we characterize cost differences, or what our guides conclude.

We do not publish sponsored content, native advertising, or paid editorial placements. If this policy changes, it will be disclosed here and on affected pages.

No Professional Advice

Nothing published on BestCostOfLiving.com constitutes financial, tax, legal, or real estate advice. Our content is intended to inform and help readers understand cost-of-living differences — not to substitute for advice from qualified professionals. We include this disclaimer throughout the site because we believe it matters, not just as a legal formality.
